I still remembered that cold winter day when I first discovered this tiny family-run shop in the basement of a sketchy-looking shopping mall in Chinatown, downtown Calgary. They were so small that there were only a tiny bench and two tables and they didn’t take debit card because of the transaction fee (I had to scramble to withdraw money). Their kimbab (a similar version of Japanese sushi but with all cooked ingredients) and soondae (stuffed glass noodles in blood sausages – don’t judge, the Brits have their blood puddings too!) were wonderful, with such a unique taste of home-cooked food.
Recently while wandering around in Chinatown with my friend, I discovered that they have relocated to a proper shop next to Wow Chicken. I felt such nostalgia and lol, pride, to be one of their early customers. If you’re obsessed with Korean food like me and want to have a quick cheap bites ($8/person) with friends, this is the place! Besides the humble kimbab (which still tasted really good the last time I checked), they now offer ramyun, tteokbokki and a variety of korean snack dishes too. I did try the ramyun, which was okay~. I was not happy cause I think they used a cheaper kind of instant noodles instead of the nongshim chewier kind of korean instant noodles (how ironic – instant noodles is supposed to be cheap, how can you go even cheapter lol). That said, their kimbab trumps the rest.
I’m obviously more biased for this place because of the supposed “history” I had with this place, but I don’t care. I still like this place for its kimbab and will visit it again soon.
