TL;DR: Too long, Don’t remember Pt.1

I have a list of places that I vaguely remember, or do not have enough to write about. Will rant more when I visit them again, or just feel a general need to rant.

WILL VISIT AGAIN:

  • Lucky Place Restaurant (108 3 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2P 0E7): You know it’s good when you’re surrounded by Chinese grandparents and their families. Great food for the price. They have all of the common Chinese/Canto dishes that you can think of. Would recommend doing your research before coming, or taking a friend who can speak Canto/Mandarin there lol
  • Oishii Sushi (8338 18 St SE #338, Calgary, AB T2C 4E4): Probably the only sushi place with reasonable price and quality that I would visit again in Calgary. They got their rolls and their fish down. The only complain was that they were very stingy on the seaweed salad.
  • Crunchy House (420, 20 Crowfoot Crescent Northwest, Calgary, AB T3G 3T2): Serve Korean Fried Chicken. Green onion chicken was GREAT, much better than the one offered at Wow Chicken. Sorry, Wow Chicken, love you much but because you have become mainstream I feel inclined to seek out other places that deserve more recognition, like this one.
  • Alforno (222 7 St SW, Calgary, AB T2P 0WhatsApp Image 2018-07-24 at 20.58.09E4): Great ambience to take photo. Tried their happy hour pizza and lemon tart. Pizza was okay, quite expensive for the . Lemon tart was on the sweet side, but looked gorgeous, and was worth it for the price ($5)

  • An obscure place with really good Dosa in the Northeast: Dosa is the Indian take on crepe. It is made from rice and white lentil flours, so it is definitely more healthy. The paper-thin, cripsy dosa here is one of the best ones I have had so far (counting home-made one)
  • Earls on Stephen Ave (315 8 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2P 4K1): Everyone knows Earls so there isn’t much to talk about. I really enjoyed their happy hours tacos – 3 for $5! Great tangy and kicks to the otherwise mundane tacos lol
  • Calgary Court Restaurant (119 2 Ave SE, Calgary, AB T2G 0B2): Not too cheap but have good variety. Their portions seem to have shrunken quite a bit, which is a shame, really.
  • UNA (618 17 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T2S 0B4): Visited during their happy hours promotion month. The cheese was great on the pizza, glad they was using the cheese generously. The Cesear kale salad with bread crumbs (instead of croutons) and prosciutto was tad bit too salty, but overall great.
  • Gaga Pizzeria (1236 12 Ave SW, Calgary, AB T3C 1A7): Visited this place back in 2015 and my mind was blown when I tasted their thin crust, home-made pizza. They are rated No. 1 on TripAdvisor, so that should be a testament to how great this place is.
  • Sharwama Station (27 10 St NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1V8): Basic Sharwama with an air conditioned place to cool down from the summer heat. Good price for the generous amount of food. Came here more than 5 times already
  • Village IceCream: Visited this place multiple times already because of their Earl Grey ice cream. Will come back and the ice cream WITH the cone.
  • Sso Yummy
  • Calan Noodle
  • The Warehouse
  • Bonga

Will probably not visit again:

  • Rose Garden Thai Restaurant: Too expensive. I mean, I shouldn’t expect the price to be low for a place on Stephen Ave. But really the curry and the rice were disappointing – lack of Thai basil, weak curry smell, weird-tasting bamboo shoots
  • Cafe 16: I like this place for its squid tentacles (another word that probably shouldn’t be used in describing food lol), fried chicken wings and shaved ice. They have removed both the squids and shaved ice, and we waited 40 mins for chicken wings so I won’t probably go here again
  • Cora: Had breakfast here with generic pancakes and fruits in syrup. The overload of sugar and the overwhelming taste of artificiality prevent me from coming here again
  • Famoso: Went here 3 times. Pizza was overpriced and the crust was almost too burnt. I understand some people want their crust burnt or charred, but no thanks, I will pass on the charcoal.
  • Juree’s Thai Place: Went here 3 times already for dinner. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing bad with this place, it’s just not that good for the price.
  • Via Cibo: Came here 2 times. Not really impressed with their personal pizza (it’s too small for the price). The pasta was okay
  • Ikemen Ramen Bar: came here 4 times already. It was nice the first time, to try it when it opened in 2015. Recently tried it again but it never quite surpassed my initial impression. There are better noodles place to try out there so I won’t probably come here again
  • Kinjo Sushi in Dalhousie: Just too expensive for the amount of fish I get
  • Fusion Sushi in Kensington and Chinatown: Notorious for its giant rice roll with 80% rice (I’m totally exaggerating there)
  • Koto Sushi Downtown: Expensive for the food. Taste like sauce with generic rice and other stuff. The only decent one was their tempura roll because the crunchiness of the batter distracted how poor the rice and everything else taste
  • Tokachi Sushi in Chinatown: What a waste. Had a very good buffet (albeit expensive) with thick cuts of sashimis and everything else was a blur in my memory.
  • Julio’s Barrio: Average with generic nachos and tacos. The only thing that piqued my interest was their drink, which I unfortunately didn’t order lol.
  • Po-ke: Tried it for the hype and was left disappointed. It was literally fish, rice and other stuff mixed together without getting in a wrap/sushi roll form
  • Wami Ootoya Sushi at Brentwood: Tried this place because we ran out of suggestion for food. Nothing special. Price was okay.
  • The Big Cheese Poutinerie in Kensington: Tried it once with a friend. It is just soggy fries and gravies, nothing special in my opinion. Nothing against the place, it’s just the dish that they sell is fundamentally flawed (pouring hot gravy over perfectly crispy fries to make it soggy)
